of his time to chris stevens, the movie, so, why is the administration hesitant to use the word terror? a key foreign policy victory of this administration was the killing of osama bin laden. and this summer at a fund-raiser, the president said al-qaeda is on the run and we got bin laden. well, as we said that july night, the part about al-qaeda on the run didn't look that way to us. al-qaeda linked militants were there on the libyan weapons obtained after the u.s. and nato intervention in that country and now that four americans have been killed in north africa by extremist groups, the question remains. should the united states have known this attack on the american ambassador was coming and did the administration lie about intelligence that al-qaeda linked groups were responsible for his death for the past two weeks? representative mac thornberry is "outfront" tonight. good to see you, sir. >> glad to be here. >> i know this is an issue you care a lot about. you've spent time in mali in the past. you've been briefed on the situation in benghazi. at that briefing, were you told that a

in washington over what happened the nikt ambassador chris stevens was killed. today, leon panetta stepped in to the fray, finally using the t word. >> the reason i think pretty clearly it was a terrorist attack because a group of terrorists obviously conducted that attack on the consulate. and against our individuals. >> clearly, a terrorist attack. now, panetta stopped short of saying which terrorist group was specifically responsible, but for two weeks, the white house and state department have refrained from blaming terrorists directly and when hillary clinton started to ame al-qaeda, the state department backed off. here she is in the u.n. meeting we reported on last night connecting al-qaeda linked groups to what she called the tragic attack. >> for some time, al-qaeda in the islamic mag and other groups have launched attacks and kid p kidnappings to other countries and are working with other extremists to undermine the transitions in north africa as we tragically saw in benghazi. as we tragically saw in benghazi. after our show, the state department backtracked saying clinton was s

stevens as part of a larger narrative about leadership. you have sent a leader to secretary of state clinton saying diplomats requested additional security and that those requests were denied. can you tell us more about that? >> in my letter, we outlined 13 security interest attacks, threats against western targets. let's remember that in the six months that led up to 9/11, which was the death of four americans, the death of an ambassador, first time since the 1970s that has happened. they did ask for increased security. they actually diminished the security pro file. did you know for instance that twice, our compound there in bengha benghazi, sovereign territory, was bombed two times? the white house had never told the american people that let alone the word. did you know that the british ambassador had two assassination attempts on his life? did you know that secretary, ambassador stevens had a facebook post showing where he runs, his picture, and people were advocating they kill the ambassador. all of these things in the six months running up to 9/11 and his ultimate death. it was

when ambassador stevens lost his life he was torteured. >> i have reports that the body was torteured. it is not a pleasant thing to talk about. and seals that were there were not part of the security force and on a different mission and the seals run to the sound of fire. they did their job and duty and were great americans and unfortunately it was not a spontanous attack when ambassador rice said it was a spontanous even and our relationship with israel and never been better. that is misleading. our relationship with israel is strained . they are preparing to do a unilateral attack and our position over seas is dangerous and fragile. >> brian: we understand that intercepts show groups were talking to each other and bragging after the killing of four americans, including the ambassador and two navy seals and it makes it seem that an operation is under foot and it seems there is a special operation to go get these goys. would you support that? >> absolutely. you have to show leadership and policy of appeasement of apology doesn't work. our friends over seas understand strength and ame

the attack that killed ambassador stevens and three other americans. for example, they say that ambassador stevens used to jog almost daily, frequently with his security detail. but that the -- according to their sources they say, a pro-gadhafi facebook website posted a stacked photo of stevens and also a threat against him. so he stopped temporarily stopped for about a week. and then he went back again. here's what congressman daryl issa tells cnn. >> all indications are the ambassador was not reckless and took the advice always of his security forces including sometimes when they said meetings needed to be canceled. so i think this is a failure of intelligence, a failure of security and a failure of judgment. but not of the now-deceased ambassador. >> and, wolf, there are other incidents in fact we've been reporting on them all along that they note. one was an assailant blowing a hole in the security perimeter at the north gate of the benghazi mission tworks rocket propelled grenade rounds were fired at the benghazi office of the red cross. and finally the most serious probably was other
